How to Teach a Dog it's Name
Measure out their daily allowance of food. I feed 3 x a day in the beginning.
How much to feed? Depends on too many variables such a food quality, breed of dog. Ask your breeder.
Sit on the floor. Have food in a pocket or pouch. Keep it fun, calm and don't get excited. Your calm will translate to the pup. Excitement will be picked up by the pup and repeated in their behavior.
Call the pups' name, when the pup looks at you, reward with a yes. If the pup is distracted, they are young after all, make a noise, a tsking noise will do. Repeat till your pocket is empty. This will take only a few meal allowances for the pup to reliably learn its name. Don't always feed from the same hand. It will teach them to anticipate.
Feed the reward from under their nose. This ensures that the pup does not jump for your hand, thereby not teaching your pup to jump!
This can lead to focus training too. As your pup responds faster to their name, wait a second, make a noise if you have to get them to look at your eyes, say good, wait a few seconds, say yes, then reward from below. Now, when they come, looking at your face should be first.......... say yes, reward, as they get more proficient, wait a little longer for the offering of reward. If they look away, at your hands during this small wait, make a tsking noise to call their eyes back to yours.
This will be a natural reaction, when their name is called, to look to you for direction. As the pup gets older, this early focus work will translate into any situation where the pup is hesitant, or unsure, or called, they will automatically look to you for direction.
Have fun!
